She spoke with John about it and eventually he told her that he didn’t want to go to the babysitter after school any more. After a bit more prodding, Sandra learned a terrible truth – the family friend she had trusted to care for her children after school had been sexually abusing them for months.
The next day Sandra called the police to report the abuse. The next day she received a phone call from a CAFY case manager who discussed their services. Sandra was pleased with the quick response and they helped her right away.
The abuse of her children by family friends Sandra had known her whole life was devastating to not only her children but also Sandra and her extended family. She no longer had reliable childcare and worried about losing her job, so CAFY assisted her with finding childcare and transportation for her children to and from school. The family’s CAFY case manager arranged court education and companionship for the children and Sandra when they were required to testify in the court hearing. CAFY also arranged regular play therapy sessions for John and his sister and counseling for Sandra to help the entire family process the trauma that had happened to them.
The care and counseling provided by CAFY helped Sandra and her children navigate the challenging legal and emotional terrain they encountered during this difficult period in their lives. Sandra reports, “We feel more safe and secure, thanks to CAFY and the help we received from them.”
