Terry’s Story

Terry’s Story

Terry was able to call 911 for help, but before the police arrived her boyfriend had been hit by gunfire and later died from the injuries.

Terry received a referral to CAFY from the police officers responding to the scene. After a long night responding to police questions, she and her young children were left traumatized and unsure what to do or where to go next. They did not feel safe in their damaged home and had no family in the area to turn to. Worried that her ex-husband might return to find them in the home, Terry called the CAFY 24-hour helpline for help.

(Terry spoke to a helpline specialist and informed them about the incident at her home. She informed them that her home was no longer safe due to the damage and she did not feel safe staying there in case her ex-husband returned. The helpline specialist contacted the supervisor who was on call to assist Terry and her children for an emergency placement and stated a case manager would follow up with her.)

A CAFY helpline specialist listened to Terry’s story and heard her concerns for her family’s immediate safety. The helpline specialist contacted the supervisor on call, who arranged for emergency placement and assigned a case manager to follow up with her. The CAFY team provided a place for Terry and her family to stay and arranged for the repair of her home. CAFY also ensured that her family had groceries to prepare meals and that she and her children had transportation to school and work. Terry’s CAFY case manager worked with her to create a victim services plan and arranged for her to have a court companion, regular mental health counseling for herself and her children, and a safety plan to protect her family from any future threats.
Terry and her children were able to move back into their home safely and begin rebuilding their lives, and CAFY was with them every step of the way.
