Educate, Empower and Embrace
Violence is a major public health issue affecting mental, physical, emotional, financial and spiritual health. CAFY is fully convinced that education, awareness and prevention efforts are key components to reducing crime, the prevalence of violence and its devastating impact on society.
Community Advocates for Family & Youth, Inc. has provided victim services to Rape, Child and Elderly Abuse, Aggravated Assaults and Robbery victims in Prince George's County since 2003. CAFY's vision is two-fold: first, help victims become confident and empowered survivors who hold offenders accountable; second, create a shared sense of responsibility and community awareness through continuous education and an advocacy-minded judicial system.
CAFY's mission is to Educate, Empower and Embrace victims as they speak the truth on their journey to justice. We achieved that mission by being the "Constant Link" victims and offering case management, court companionship, education, and resource referrals to approximately 250 clients annually. Supported by volunteers, CAFY provides the only formal non-evidentiary victim education programs in the state of Maryland. Their unique Youth Court Education Program (YCEP) and Adult Courtroom Education (ACE) assist victims in becoming effective witnesses.
CAFY is also a designated Volunteers in Police Service program, a national association of Chiefs of Police, recognizing the value add of volunteers in law enforcement. In April 2006, CAFY teamed with the White House to become a Certifying Organization for the President. Volunteer Service Award, a national program recognizing Americans who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to volunteer service and recently awarded two youth who have dedicated over 250 hours helping to raise awareness about youth victimization and five other gold awards to volunteers CAFY 2005 06 Annual Report.pdf"who have dedicated over 900 hours serving victims of crime.
Our services, education, and outreach programs provide information, tools and resources to raise awareness about victimization and the impact of crime, increase public and personal safety and health, facilitate violence prevention and encourage active participation by victims in the criminal justice system. Through culturally and socially competent programs that address and serve the diverse needs of our community, CAFY increases the ability of all individuals, families and communities to live violence and crime-free lives.
